Mini to Micro Futures Trade Copying

IntelliSize — Smart Contract Conversion That Goes Beyond Simple Ratios

When your lead account trades ES but a follower account needs micro-sized positions, a basic 1:1 swap isn't always the best answer. IntelliSize calculates the economic equivalent for each follower, then optimally splits the order between mini and micro contracts for maximum margin efficiency. Exclusive to PFACopySuite for NinjaTrader 8.

Why Simple Conversion Isn't Enough

Futures contracts come in different sizes. An E-mini S&P 500 (ES) contract controls approximately $280,000 in notional value. A Micro E-mini (MES) controls approximately $28,000 — one-tenth the size. When you're copying trades from a lead account that trades ES to a follower account that needs smaller positions, you have a conversion decision to make.

The simplest approach is a direct swap: trade ES on the lead, the follower trades MES instead. But this ignores quantity math. If the lead trades 3 ES contracts, should the follower trade 3 MES? That's only one-tenth the exposure. Should it trade 30 MES? That's the same exposure but uses 30 separate contracts — more margin, more commissions, and more working orders to manage.

The optimal answer usually falls somewhere in between — and it's different for every account depending on that account's size, sizing mode, and risk settings. This is the problem IntelliSize solves.

Basic Conversion
Lead trades 3 ES
Follower gets 3 MES
Only 10% of lead's exposure
vs
IntelliSize
Lead trades 3 ES
Follower gets 1 ES + 5 MES
50% of lead's exposure, optimally split

Two Conversion Modes — Choose Per Account

PFACopySuite offers two instrument conversion approaches. Each follower account can use a different mode — or no conversion at all.

Convert Mode

Simple 1:1 Swap

Converts the instrument to its paired counterpart while preserving the calculated quantity. If the copier determines the follower should receive 5 contracts, Convert mode changes the instrument from ES to MES (or vice versa) and submits 5 contracts of the converted instrument.

Lead trades5 ES
Sizing calculates5 contracts
Follower receives5 MES
Use when: The follower simply needs a different contract size but the quantity ratio between accounts is already handled by your position sizing settings.

What IntelliSize Does Differently

IntelliSize is a proprietary allocation engine built into PFACopySuite. Here's what it handles on every order — automatically.

1

Understands Economic Equivalency

IntelliSize doesn't just count contracts — it understands the economic relationship between mini and micro instruments in each pair. This means it works from actual exposure, not simple numbers, ensuring the follower's position accurately reflects their intended sizing.

2

Integrates with Position Sizing

The follower's sizing mode (Ratio, Fixed, Account Value, NotionalValue, or PositionSize) is fully incorporated into the conversion. IntelliSize doesn't just convert — it sizes and converts in a single coordinated operation, ensuring the output respects each account's individual configuration.

3

Respects Risk Limits

Global and per-account maximum lot sizes are enforced before the allocation is finalized. IntelliSize will never exceed your configured limits, regardless of what the sizing calculation would otherwise produce.

4

Finds the Optimal Mini/Micro Blend

Using a proprietary allocation algorithm, IntelliSize determines the ideal combination of mini and micro contracts to achieve the target exposure with the fewest total contracts and the best margin efficiency. The result may be all minis, all micros, or a precise blend — whatever is optimal for that specific trade and account.

5

Submits Coordinated Orders

The optimized allocation is submitted as coordinated orders — the mini component and micro component are sent together as part of the same copy operation, with ATM strategies and protective orders scaled correctly for each component.

Supported Instrument Conversion Pairs

PFACopySuite supports conversion and IntelliSize across all major futures markets. Each pair uses the standard CME-defined relationship between its mini and micro contract. Custom pairs can be configured in global settings.

IntelliSize in Action

See the outcomes IntelliSize produces across different scenarios. Every allocation is calculated automatically on every order.

Small Follower Account (ES)
Lead trades5 ES
Follower sizing30% of lead
Follower receives1 ES + 5 MES
Very Small Follower (NQ)
Lead trades2 NQ
Follower sizing20% of lead
Follower receives4 MNQ
Medium Follower Account (ES)
Lead trades4 ES
Follower sizing50% of lead
Follower receives2 ES
Gold Futures (GC ↔ MGC)
Lead trades3 GC
Follower sizing50% of lead
Follower receives1 GC + 5 MGC

Notice how IntelliSize adapts: when the target exposure is large enough, it uses a blend of minis and micros for optimal margin. When the exposure is too small for a mini contract, it uses micros only. When the math works out evenly, it uses minis only. The right allocation is determined automatically for every trade on every account.

How Protective Orders Work with IntelliSize

When IntelliSize splits an order into mini and micro components, protective orders (stop-losses and profit targets) need to scale correctly for each component.

ATM Strategies Scale Per Component

If the follower has ATM strategy replication enabled, separate ATM brackets are applied to the mini order and the micro order independently. Each bracket is sized to match its component's quantity — 2 ES contracts get a 2-contract ATM, 5 MES contracts get a 5-contract ATM.

Self-Healing Protection Floor

If a sizing calculation produces a zero-quantity result for a protective order, PFACopySuite applies a minimum floor of 1 contract. This prevents a scenario where a follower has an open position but no stop-loss or profit target protecting it. The self-healing system then corrects the quantity once the full order picture is available.

Cross-Instrument Mismatch Detection

Position mismatch detection works across both instruments in an IntelliSize split. If the ES component fills but the MES component is rejected, PFACopySuite flags the discrepancy immediately so you can see exactly which part of the split has an issue.

Frequently Asked Questions About Instrument Conversion

Common questions about Convert mode, IntelliSize, and managing different contract sizes across accounts.

What's the difference between Convert mode and IntelliSize?
Convert mode is a simple instrument swap — it changes the contract from mini to micro (or vice versa) while keeping the calculated quantity the same. IntelliSize is more sophisticated — it uses a proprietary algorithm to analyze each follower account's sizing configuration and determine the most margin-efficient combination of mini and micro contracts. Convert mode produces a single order on one instrument. IntelliSize may produce two coordinated orders (one mini, one micro) for optimal allocation.
Can I use IntelliSize on some accounts and Convert on others?
Yes. Conversion mode is configured per follower account independently. You can have one account on IntelliSize, another on Convert, and a third on None (no conversion) — all following the same lead account within the same copy configuration.
How does IntelliSize know the relationship between mini and micro contracts?
PFACopySuite comes pre-configured with the standard CME-defined relationships for all supported instrument pairs. The software understands the economic equivalency between each mini and its corresponding micro contract and uses that relationship in its allocation calculations. If you configure custom pairs, you can define the relationship to match any contract specifications your broker offers.
Can I add custom instrument pairs that aren't in the default list?
Yes. PFACopySuite's global settings include an instrument pairs configuration panel where you can add, modify, or remove pairs. Each custom pair requires a mini symbol, a micro symbol, and the conversion ratio. This lets you extend conversion support to any market or proprietary instruments your broker offers.
Does IntelliSize work across different broker connections?
Yes. IntelliSize operates identically regardless of whether the follower account is connected through Rithmic, CQG, Tradovate, Interactive Brokers, or any other supported connection. The conversion logic is applied per account based on that account's settings — the broker type is irrelevant to the calculation.
What happens when a follower's target exposure is too small for a mini contract?
IntelliSize automatically adapts. When the target exposure is below the threshold for a mini contract, the follower receives micro contracts only. As the target exposure increases, IntelliSize begins incorporating mini contracts to reduce the total number of working orders and improve margin efficiency. The transition between micro-only and blended allocations is handled automatically based on each account's sizing.
Does IntelliSize affect the price of the orders?
IntelliSize only affects the instrument and quantity of the copied orders — it does not change the order type, price, or any other order parameters. Limit orders remain limit orders at the corresponding price level. Market orders remain market orders. Stop orders remain stop orders. The conversion applies to the contract size and quantity only.

Smarter Contract Sizing. Automatic on Every Trade.

IntelliSize handles the conversion math so you never have to calculate mini/micro splits manually. Combined with five position sizing modes and fair order processing, every follower gets precisely the right contracts on every order.
